受好莱坞影片的影响，中国人往往认为美国人浪漫而又外向，但是在与他们真正的接触中，我们又会有不被尊重的感觉。他们看上去顽固自大。尽管如此，就像中国人在两千年的儒家文明中变得谦和含蓄一样，美国人的个性也有着数百年的清教传统作为文化背景。虽然很少有美国人像父辈一样自诩为清教徒，但是即使在他们的日常行为中，清教传统依然根深蒂固，不可忽视。
